Self-doubt, sacrifice, and struggle converge into an existential crisis for a devoted classical vocalist as the mastery he strives for remains elusive.

Chaitanya Tamhane’s masterfully composed feature The Disciple is a 2020 Indian Marathi Language drama film,  will be released on April 30, 2021, exclusively on Netflix, examines a lifetime journey devoted to the art of Indian classical music.

The Disciple, Executive produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón- is the journey of Sharad Nerulkar (Aditya Modak), who diligently follows the traditions and discipline of the old masters — his guru and his father — and devoted his life to become an Indian classical music vocalist. However, as the years go by, Sharad starts to wonder whether it’s really possible to achieve the excellence he’s striving for. This is a journey of devotion, passion, and searching for the absolute, in contemporary Mumbai.

The trailer of the film is deeply focusing on the greatness of Indian classical music and also Sharad Nerulkar who is dedicatedly practicing in front of his father. The trailer established a beautiful relation between music and divinity and also pay the necessity to achieve it. The trailer of Disciple also shows that how Sharad started to question these sacrifices. The inner confusion is revealed through various stages of his life. The sacrifices that he made also involved his job and also his personal interests. The voiceover is suggesting that how the path on this divine journey requires one to support being alone and hungry.
